Bringing Chronic Pain Out of the Shadows

Work with the MAYDAY Fund

100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain. Yet, with so few resources to address this public health problem, building awareness about the issue, educating the public and policymakers, and identifying leaders in the field to serve as life-long advocates is of the utmost importance.

Over nearly 20 years, Burness has worked with The MAYDAY Fund on a number of initiatives. We ran a 10-year Fellowship Program designed to empower pain experts  to communicate their science in the most compelling, effective and engaging ways reaching diverse audiences through a variety of channels. We organized and supported the Mayday Special Committee on Pain and the Practice of Medicine and the committee’s recommendations in a released report were the precursor to recommendations made in the Institute of Medicine’s report on pain management.  We have also supported the communications efforts of grantees.

With this track-record of growth, The MAYDAY Fund needed a new-from-the-ground-up website to solidify itself as the leading funder for pain research supporting grantees to raise their  voices for change.
