Advancing Palliative Care

Work with the Center to Advance Palliative Care

Diane E. Meier, MD is one of the pioneers of palliative medicine—defined as the care and treatment received during a serious or terminal illness. She is the Director of the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC), a national organization devoted to increasing the number and quality of palliative care programs in the United States. Under her leadership the number of palliative care programs in U.S. hospitals has more than tripled in the last 10 years. At the School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City she practices what she preaches and teaches residents and young physicians the art of communication and connection with patients and families—a skill doctors and nurses are not often taught.

To help spread her teaching more broadly, Burness worked with Dr. Meier to create a video, “Palliative Care and the Human Connection,” that has received close to 45,000 views on YouTube.
