Wrangling Healthy Food to Bag the Junk

Work with the National Education Association Health Information Network

There’s a growing movement among our nation’s schools to offer students healthier meals, snacks and drinks. Many schools have been working for years to offer healthier options in their vending machines, school stores and a la carte lines, and updated national standards rolled out at the start of the 2014-15 school year.

Bag the Junk, a project of the National Education Association Health Information Network (NEAHIN) funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, launched a campaign to solicit success stories from schools and districts that have replaced junk foods and sugary drinks with healthier fare.

To bring visibility to the campaign, Burness created illustrations with a charismatic cast of characters—a cowgirl wrangling healthy foods and fruits and vegetables with personality. The art was adapted for use on a poster, social media images, and a series of web, Twitter and Facebook ads.
